It's a Love Fest; Quantum Indian Summer
Live recordings from Quantum World Congress 2024 show floor
This September I attended the third Quantum World Congress in Washington DC, also my third. Let me tell you, the vibe has completely changed in three years. For someone following the public policy space, attending the QWC International Forum is the best place to witness how governments are approaching quantum.
The first year we had 18 countries, each sitting at their own round table in the Ronald Reagan building in the heart of DC. The diplomats sat mostly quiet, allowing for the researchers to explain what each country was doing in terms of science. The leading countries, Australia, UK, and the Netherlands did a large chunk of the speaking.
The second year, we had moved to Tyson, VA, and had a bigger room. 22 countries attended with larger delegations, this time also the diplomats and civil servants had found their voice. One after another stood up to praise their countries, what a hotbed source of quantum innovation their country was. Competition was clearly the underpinning vibe.
This time, 29 countries shared tables, said hello to old friends and discussed much more openly about the global issues and challenges that the industry is facing, and how to overcome them. By now, governments have realized that no one country can succeed in quantum alone. We need standards, regulation, flow of talent and an international supply chain. People were willing to give and share.
This same collaborative, relaxed and optimistic vibe was palpable on the show floor. Panel discussions, announcements, and especially the corridor talk oozed newly found excitement.
This would be a good time for any country or region to start looking into quantum, if you aren’t already.
